The process of idea generation requires cultivation in the face of numerous obstacles: cultural, internal corporate-driven barriers, leadership and dedicated management. Our study has illuminated barriers and also has offered a means for companies to selflearn with the tools of conscious assessment. Our study thus far demonstrates the distance between the ideal and current practices, and thus the need for new organizational structures to harness and cultivate innovation—not only within the enterprise, but in societal institutions as well.

The optimum qualities of such organizations are not yet clear, but our study indicates that a top-down appreciation of open innovation at least makes possible the comprehensive shifts in thinking and working that are needed.
The cases highlighted in this study help demonstrate the need for organizational design within the enterprise to facilitate the collaborative generation of ideas generated internally and externally.
