In this way of thinking the word stands both as the means of creation and as the means of salvation, for as "word" it stands as the exteriorization of the mind of God, who creates and saves through His speech. But with John, the Word will no longer be a personification of a quality, but a Person who will still be the perfect reflection of the mind of the God who gives eternal life through His Word. Characteristics of the Word Most important for John is the first Genesis story (Genesis 1, 1 - 2, 4a) which explicitly tells us that God creates through His Word.

What kind of Messiah is that? Why continue to hope in him? In 8, 29 - 10, 1 we have stories which are of three types. First, there are stories in which Jesus (twice) predicts his terrible death, followed by resurrection; the reaction to these predictions varies from sadness to disappointment to total confusion, especially as reference to the resurrection seems to be ignored. Second, there are stories which serve to underline the fact that, if one intends to follow Jesus, one must be prepared to carry MARK'S INTRODUCTION IN CONTEXT 33 one's own cross; These stories include teachings which show what the cross can mean in a Christian's life of virtue.

To introduce the subject of rejection and death and resurrection, Jesus employs about himself not the term "Messiah", but the title "son of man". This choice of Jesus points to the figure in Daniel, Chapter 7, where we find the "one like a son of man" who is given the responsibility which rightfully belongs to God of judging human beings. This judgment belongs to God for it a occurs at the end of the ages and is the entry point to eternal life. In this chapter of Daniel it becomes clear that the figure who will make these judgments as the king of a heavenly kingdom will judge only after he has suffered.
