Women, meanwhile, had complicated responses to the ways in which they were being marked out for reform. The majority of women who were excluded badly needed paid work in order for themselves and their families to survive. Much women’s work went on in the mines illegally. The paucity of other forms of employment in the mining areas made for serious problems and drove many young women into domestic service, an option which was usually avoided if there were other alternatives because of the personal dependence involved.
